Feathered Friends

Both of my parents were avid “at home” bird watchers, and had many feeders around our yard. They loved to share with us kids, what they learned through this hobby, so I grew up loving and appreciating birds.

A part of the enjoyment of wintering in South Texas is the new varieties of birds we get to experience there.

I was fortunate to catch this shot of a Great Kiskadee at one of the many birding locations in the RGV, and was pleased that I also caught a decent reflection.

Great shot! That’s more than “decent”! When we were hiking recently, we could hear a really interesting-sounding bird call. Do you know if there’s an app that would have identified it, if I would have recorded it?

Thanks for your kind compliment on my photo, Lenore! I’ve just recently downloaded the Merlin Bird ID app. It works great and is very user friendly. You record the sound and the app ID’s the bird.

I have three feeders near my den window, by the wood fence and trees for the birds to hide. It’s a buffet all day long. Cardinals, Blue Jays, Buntings, Waxwings, Sparrows, Blackbirds, Bluebirds, Wren, Woodpecker, Dove, and more. Crows, and now the Roadrunners, have discovered the peanuts I put on the ground for the Blue Jays. Nice picture.

What a great variety of visitors to your feeders, Phil. Of those on your list, the only ones I’m not crazy about are crows. We have lots of them here and they love to wake me in the morning, long before I’m ready for that. Have a great day!

I love bird watching and listening to the early morning chorus trying to guess which bird is singing. Do you use the Merlin bird app?

I just recently got the Merlin Bird App. My sister recommended it. It’s very cool and is working well here at home. Can’t wait to try it in Texas. Have a fab rest of your day, Carole!

This is a Great Kiskadee, not a Sparrow. Have a great day!

Beautiful! I seem to only be able to capture pictures of large birds. Love the yellow, too!

Thanks, Betty! It’s always rewarding to catch decent still photos of any size birds, because they’re usually always in motion. Have a great day!
