Plan B

When hubs and I entered full retirement life, we agreed on winters somewhere warm to get away from our harsh Canadian winters.

Having explored a few options while we were still working (vacations to Mexico and Arizona, a Caribbean cruise, and a 10 Day stay on Curaçao), we agreed on trying the RGV in South Texas.

Our first two winters there were with our motorhome and we completely lucked in to a park and community far beyond our expectations.

During our second season, we decided to purchase a mobile home in that park.

We have zero regrets … well, maybe just one.

Hubs’ health no longer justifies long stretches south of the 49’th parallel, so the mobile home purchase was maybe not such a great idea. The one truly special thing about the large mobile, is that we were able to house and entertain many family visitors after we bought it. Those special memories will last forever.

When he’s feeling up to it, we’ll make one last trip to the RGV to pack up our sentimental items to bring home, list our mobile for sale, and bid a sad farewell to the dear friends we’ve made there over the past seven years.

I’ll post updates as things progress – for now, suffice it to say… I’m OK … Sad, but OK.

There’s always a plan B.

Thank you for sharing this with us. I don’t have much to add to all the wonderful comments you have received. You are loved, supported, and known. Big hugs to both of you.

I am very sorry to hear this Terry. It was a blessing for you to have this option for the time you have had but the drive was so long I understand. I wonder if with part of the sale money, a sauna may be a good option for good health? Are these popular in Canada?

We have saunas available at our city pool and hotels, Lana. Because we’re renters now, we don’t have that option. Also, hubs has to be extremely cautious with sudden temperature changes. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Ah I see, that must be a worry. I will remember you both in prayer as you navigate the sale etc.

Sorry to hear this, Terry! I know how hard it is to accept that we are getting older and can no longer do the some of the things we used to do, but it sounds like you have a good attitude. Hang in there!

Thanks, Mary! Aging and the limitations sometimes imposed by it are a tough reality to face, but face it we must, and we must move on. In the great scheme of things, at 73 and 71, hubs and I are still young, so we have time to figure out the next steps. Enjoy your Saturday!

“Sad, but OK” is an honest place to be, and you said it without dressing it up. Seven years of winters and a mobile big enough to host all that family — that’s not a purchase that didn’t work out, whatever the resale ends up being. I hope the trip back to pack up is gentle, and that the goodbyes to those friends leave room for a few more visits.

Nodding my head … I get that sad but okay. For me, I’m not as surprised anymore with changes. It just is. I honor you feeling the sadness and breathing out you are okay.🤗❤️

Thanks, Dwight, and yes, not many surprises as we age and things change. Rolling with the flow while acknowledging my feelings seems a comfortable path of least resistance. Have a great day!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Lenore and yes, change is the only certainty in life – that and death (taxes used to be in that group too, but in some places, taxes aren’t a certainty). Enjoy your Friday!

Sorry to hear that hubby’s health doesn’t support your time in the sun and warmth. Perhaps you can still escape for a bit of the time. Have you thought about the coast or the island? My grandparents, in the 60’s, wintered there.

Thanks for the suggestions, Bernie. I don’t think we’d go as far as the coast or island, but maybe the Okanagan. We have to play it by ear for a bit. Have a fab Friday!

The Okanagan area has a lot of inversions so if you just want warm it is decent but if you want sun you might have to go up on a ski hill above the clouds. My friend from here was shocked when she moved there despite my trying to warn her.

Terry, I am sorry to hear this. I know how much you enjoyed your time there. You were lucky to be able to do that – even though it wasn’t for as long as you had hoped. When you returned home last spring, I sensed a real happiness in you to return home. I am sure wherever you are, you will choose to be happy.

Thanks so much, Betty. Yes, I was happy to return home, as I’ve always been and I’ve always been just as happy to return to TX for the winters. Our initial hope was for 10 winters, so we got close to that. You’re 100% right in stating that happiness is a choice, and that’s exactly what I try to choose every day. Enjoy your Friday!
