Winter Staples – Everything Chopped

Each winter, we eat far more salads than in the summer.

Why? It’s because prepared salads are abundant here in south Texas.

Taylor Farms makes a variety of single serving and double serving salads.

The part we enjoy the most, is that we can enjoy a variety of salads without having to buy all of the ingredients separately and then risk them going to waste if not used in a timely manner.

For the next few β€œfoodie Friday” posts, I’ll feature and review different pre-made salads that we enjoy.

My feature photo is of the single serving Everything Chopped Salad from Taylor Farms.

Ingredients: Romaine lettuce, grilled white meat chicken, carrot, red cabbage, sharp white cheddar cheese, cheese and garlic seasoned crouton crumbles, everything bagel seasoning, and ranch dressing. *No synthetic colours or high fructose corn syrup*

These salads, available at WalMart, come in a disposable plastic bowl, but I prefer to plate them.

My review: I love that all of the ingredients are separated in the packaging, so nothing is soggy. This one had great flavour and crunch. Although they contain some cooked chicken, don’t expect more than a tablespoon or so of small cubes of meat in the single serving size. The cheese adds extra protein.

At under $3 USD, it’s good bang for your buck.

It looks good. I’m planning to go to Walmart tomorrow, so I’m adding this to the shopping list.

I sometimes pickup one of the prepared salads at Sprouts, a local fresh food chain market. Unfortunately, they are not cheap. I love the Greek salad, with little stuffed grape leaves included. Costco has prepared salads at a more reasonable price, but lack the variety. Next time I am at Walmart, I will try your suggestion. πŸ₯—

We have a Sprouts store near here too. I’ll check out their salads next time we’re there. Have a great day!

I will have to look for these salads. We usually make our own, but I like the idea of more ingredients.

We started getting them when we had our motorhome. I hope you find them and enjoy them, Betty. Here, they’re near the deli section. Have a great day!

Terry, it is interesting that you eat more salads in the winter. Our preference is hearty soups, but we still make salads, too. We just change up the ingredients a bit. Good point about the waste created when shopping for two. Always a challenge.

It’s because the prepared salads are more readily available in South Texas where we spend our winters than they are in our Canadian summers. I don’t make a lot of soups and stews here in South Texas, as the weather is most often too hot for that. Have a fab day, Suzanne!

I love that these salads result in less wastage are great value and are especially suited to couples or small households where a whole lettuce would rot in the fridge unused. I do worry about the plastic and the possible loss of nutrients from food being cut up/grated. The bagged pre-prepared salads here contain preservatives (in the bag linings) so that spinach leaves keep fresh – the time to freight food to the supermarket means these bagged salads are 2 weeks old by the time they are placed on the shelf….

Thanks so much for your comments, Amanda. It’s always very interesting to hear how things happen in the land down under.

Prepared salads are such a good idea. when I buy all the separate ingredients so much ends up on the compost heap.

That salad look amazing. I would like the separate packaging, too. I could get a prepared salad but skip things like croutons, pumpkin seeds, and dried cranberries. 😊

Yes, it works great if there are certain things you can’t eat or don’t like. I’ve read that Taylor farms now has a distributor in Toronto. If they get one closer, like Calgary, they could eventually be available in Sask too! Have a fab day, Anne!
