Homesick

Do you ever get homesick for places that aren’t home?

I sure do.

Since we’ve been wintering in South Texas, I’ve come to love the area around Port Isabel and South Padre Island. I think of it often when we’re back home for the summers in our landlocked Canadian province. Our summers here at home are great, weather wise. There’s just something about our winters, living so close to the Gulf of Mexico, that makes me “homesick” for the water.

I’ve lived on the Pacific and the Atlantic beaches and still prefer the Gulf to all oceans. My son and his family live on North Padre Island, so when we need a shot of salt water, we head to his abode and go deep-sea fishing.

I’ve been fortunate to dip my toes in both of those oceans as well, Phil. I prefer the waters of the GOM too. I’m happy you get to visit your son in a place that allows you that luxury. Thanks for stopping by and have a fab rest of your day!

My son, Wes, has a house on one of the canals to the Gulf off of Packery Channel. He has two Brown Pelicans that sit on his boat dock most days. He feeds them bait fish my grandson nets out of the canal. Not sure, but I believe he calls them Burt and Ernie, but they could be Ethel and Lucy. Pretty cool sea birds. We plan on going down in August for some fishing and maybe some bucket list surfing.

On the causeway between Port Isabel and South Padre, they have pelican warning signs, much like our deer and moose warning signs we see on the roads here at home. I laughed out loud the first time I saw that, Phil. Love the names your grandson chose, no matter which rendition. Enjoy your August visit and happy fishing/surfing!

I certainly do, Terry. I love being by the water, too. I think of Big Cypress when we are back home – but! I don’t want to be there in the heat. The sunsets from our Big Cypress campsite are gorgeous. And, of course, Lake Michigan is always in my heart. Each place – and each season – holds its own glory. I remind myself not to miss it.

Well put, Betty!! I’m generally happy “not” to be in South Texas summer heat as well. That said, our summer days so far here in Southern Sask have been hotter than those at our park in Texas, and we don’t have the luxury here of driving over to the GOM for a cool down dip 😂 Thanks for reading and weighing in and enjoy the rest of your Monday!

I can certainly relate. I grew up on the central Texas coast and moved to Iowa in my twenties. While I’ve come to love the prairies I live by now, I still miss the open beaches back home

There’s just something about that water, isn’t there, Randy? Where we are in the winter is about an hour’s drive from S Padre and the GOM, but we drive that distance regularly here on the prairies and never get even close to a body of water like that. Thanks for dropping by to read and comment and have a great day!

I love the idea of being close to a large body of water, waking up to the sound of the ocean, walking along the beach at sunset. In reality, I spent two weeks on Vancouver Island many years ago and all I remember is the smell. 🤢 I’ll stick with the prairies. 😊

There’s no bad smell at South Padre Island, Anne. If there was, I’d remember it. We’ve stayed at a waterfront hotel there a few times, and yes … waking to the sounds and sights on the water is a wonderful experience! Thanks for reading and commenting and enjoy your Monday!

Maybe it’s just around Vancouver Island? Have a great day, Terry!

Yep, I can understand that. I’ve never lived by a large body of water, but I could absolutely envision myself loving that life too! Great photo!!!
