Sometimes Nasty

Blue green is one of my favourite colours except when it applies to the type of algae on the river that meanders lazily through our prairie city.

I still enjoy my early morning power walks on the trails and paths alongside the Souris River.

I’m just not enjoying the views as much now that the annual algae bloom has set in.

The Souris (turns into the Mouse River in North Dakota) is very shallow here. As a result, a rainy summer (which washes nutrients from nearby fields into the river) followed by heat in excess of 30°C (86°F) for an extended period, and an unusual zero wind for weeks on end, makes for perfect conditions for an extreme algae bloom.

And blooming it is! This year, in places, the algae mat is so thick it looks like a wrinkled carpet.

The next photo shows opposite sides of one of the bridges I walk across on my trails.

It must get trapped under the bridge for a bit before it moves on

Blue green algae is toxic to pets and livestock and the usual big flocks of ducks and geese have chosen elsewhere to have their last summer swims before making their way to warmer climes for the winter months.

Thankfully, our drinking water supply isn’t sourced from the mighty and currently nasty Souris.

We get that too at our nearest lakes – Earlswood Lakes. Horrible looking stuff.

Should say, your photos are still glorious despite it!

It really is horrid looking, Lana – and toxic besides – it even looks toxic, doesn’t it?

This is a lovely view on one of your walking trails but unfortunate how toxic it is to pets. Have a great weekend, Terry!

We’re fortunate to have many beautiful and well-maintained walking and biking trails along all of the edges of our little city, Elena. I hope you have a great weekend too!

I suspect my original comment did not go through as I was on spotty Wi-Fi.
Our son’s dog died consuming water that had blue green algae on it. 5 dogs went down and he was the only one to suffer. It was a sad day. We couldn’t see the bloom from our house.

I wish there was a “care” option in addition to the “like” here in WordPress. That’s very sad and the fact that you couldn’t see the bloom from your house shows how toxic the blue green is. So sad.

It’s a pretty river – without the algae!

That it is, Betty. It’s an unfortunate thing that nature cooks this up for it every year around this time. This year is particularly bad. Have a great day!
