Happiness Is … A Tomato Festival

On the August (Saskatchewan Day) long weekend, two of my sisters (the third one was feeling unwell, so unable to join us) and I attended the third annual Tomato Festival, sponsored by the Regina Farmers Market group.

A pit stop before the event. We wore matching shirts decorated with tomatoes

This was the first time any of us had attended the event and we decided it won’t be the last.

There were over seventy vendors, most selling freshly picked garden produce. There were others with everything from jewelry made from silver spoons, to honey, to baking – if it was home made or hand made, it was there.

One of many vendors selling the stars of the show

One vendor had some cute signs for his produce:

They were plump and sweet
Some of his beans were in a crock pot

The event was held in the stunning Queen Mary II Flower Gardens, adjacent to our province’s legislative building. Although I’ve been there many times, I’ve never had a photo of myself there. Now I do.

The day was forecast to be extremely hot, so we were there when the festival opened and finished our shopping by the end of the morning.

I purchased all of the ingredients I needed for the borscht (beet soup) that I make every summer for our mom. It’s her favourite soup, and we arrived home early enough for me to get the borscht made in my Instant Pot.

It was a “perfect in every way” kind of day.

Those tomatoes look so plump, juicy, and fresh they make my mouth water!

That’s a lot of tomatoes. Looks like a fun road trip and how wonderful to see the Ledge gardens in the summer.

Absolutely, Bernie! We often take a drive through there when we go to the city, but I hadn’t walked around in there since I was single and worked at RGH – I lived not far and often walked through Wascana Park trails. That was before the goose population (and droppings) became an issue. Have a great day!

What a fantastic day out. I loved seeing this and your final result using the festival ingredients. Just sorry your other sis was unable to attend. Have you ever been inside the palatial building?

I was inside the parliament building many years ago as a part of an 12th grade field trip. We had a tour and then sat in on the legislature. My plan is to refresh my memory by touring it again someday soon. Have a great day, Lana!

How fun! Having sisters is the BEST! All three of you have the same lovely smile – you can tell you’re related. It was nice of you to make your mother’s favorite soup. Sounds like a tradition has been born.

Having sisters nearby who enjoy the same things is a huge bonus, Lenore! Thanks for the compliments on the smiles, and yes, I believe the Tomato Fest is going to be an annual event. Enjoy your evening!

I love them too, Betty – Especially when they’re fresh picked. It really was a lot of fun. We all laughed so much and we all know that laughing makes us healthy. Have a great evening!

I wish I’d taken more photos of the gardens, Darryl – because they’re extensive and creative in different shapes, colours, etc. It was definitely a great time. Enjoy your evening!

It really was, Anne and I’d highly recommend going early to get a good parking spot and avoid the crowds. We left Weyburn at 7am and arrived at the parliament grounds at 8:30. It wasn’t supposed to be open until 9 but was open when we got there. As we were leaving, it was very crowded. We were happy we got what we wanted early. Have a great day!
