Happiness Is … Giving

Community Living is an organization in our province that collects gently used clothing and small household items that are re-sold in Value Village thrift stores. Proceeds go to support those in the community with intellectual disabilities.

The Yellow Bin website explains:

The clothing and small household items you donate go directly towards helping people with intellectual disabilities. We take the money raised by your donations and use it to help fund the programs offered by Inclusion Saskatchewan. Thanks to your donations, people with intellectual disabilities are provided the support they need to pay rent, buy food, find employment, and be included and valued members of society.  

Whenever we hold a garage sale, we contact Community Living when the sale is over. They send someone to pick up everything that’s left. Besides not having leftover items go to the landfill, it’s a convenient service and an easy way to donate.

    I totally agree that happiness is giving. I really like donation boxes. They are a great and easy way to give back to the community.

      They’re very popular here. There’s just such a good feeling when we can contribute somehow to the wellbeing of those less fortunate than us. That feeling is the reward.

    I have a similar thing near me but I stopped using it, despite it being convenient as I contacted them one day as I felt suspicious, something about its info sticker did not look right. I asked about how much of the £ goes to the charity they said they supported and they were very vague and did not properly answer. Some of these boxes are emptied and their items are sold on for profit and not given to charity I since learnt. I asked a collection man who came one time when I happened to be there and he didn’t speak a word of English, or pretended not to. I give to charity shops instead.

      That’s unfortunate, Lana. It’s good that you have the option to donate to charity shops. We have that too.

    When I am considering whether to keep or donate something, knowing an item will help someone else often tips the scale to donate. These yellow bins make it convenient! There is so much good in the world. This is one reminder of it. Have a good day, Terry!

      That’s a great elimination process, Betty! Yes, the yellow bins are in different spots around town. This one is at one of our big supermarkets so people can donate their goods when they go for groceries. There really is lots of good in the world if we watch for that vs the not so good.
