Four Wins for the Win

Since returning home from Texas and after listening to rave reviews from my sister on Instant Pot Yogurt, I decided to finally give it a try.

My sister has been making her own IP Yogurt for some time and says she prefers the flavour and texture to store bought.

I’ve now made my second batch and to say I’m impressed is an understatement.

From one gallon of skim milk, I get 10 cups of Greek Yogurt (the container with the red lid contains 2 cups). It’s fat free and preservative free, and has the creamy consistency of Fage.

In addition, I’m saving the whey (in the jar on the left) from straining, to add to smoothies, soups, and baking.

Not only is the taste and texture better than store bought:

>The gallon (4 litre) jug of milk I use costs on average $6.50 Cdn ($4.72 USD)

>The 10 cups (2500 mls) of Greek Yogurt that the recipe makes would cost, on average around $21 CDN ($15 USD)

So, considering the no preservatives, the usefulness of the whey, the price point, and the better texture and flavour, the lengthy process is a win, win, win, win.

I don’t have or want another counter top appliance like an instant Pot or an Air Fryer but I eat a LOT of Greek yogurt and it become so expensive…hm

I love all of my countertop appliances, Bernie – especially because they don’t heat up the kitchen on hot summer days (and hot winter days in Texas). I figure the energy it takes to use the appliance vs the oven energy usage, as well as the energy for the a/c that would run long after the oven is off, likely makes the appliances a good deal in the long run. We don’t BBQ, so my countertop appliances make up for that.

Ah in the summer we BBQ or use the pizza oven 95% of the time and rarely cook in the kitchen. I bake my bread in the pizza oven. I have a smaller heritage sized kitchen so counter space is limited but nor do we have A/C so I am very aware of not creating extra heat. Bernie

Interesting! I might need to look into that because we consume a lot of yogurt.

I learned after the first batch to do the main part of the process overnight while I slept. In total it takes upwards of 12 hours from start to finish. After the first steps (that take a couple of hours), I set it on the Yogurt setting to 9.5 hours, head to bed, and then do the last steps in the morning. It takes a lot of time, but imo, very much worth it.

It looks like a long process, but the quality of the result makes it worth it.

Thanks, Lana! I’m always happy to find new things to keep me busy and entertained, and if it’s also a healthy practice, I can’t lose, right?

Total win! I’ve been thinking of trying that too. I made yogurt on the stove once, but I’ll have to look up instructions how to do it in a pressure cooker. It’s probably a bit less involved (hopefully). :o)

It’s a long process, Lenore but not having to stand over it constantly makes a huge difference. Have a great day!

My fridge full of store bought yogurt suddenly feels inadequate! It’s so good to make your own anything with all the contaminants in our food supply.

I have to be careful because I have preservative allergies, but aside from that, it’s likely best for anyone to avoid chemical preservatives as much as possible. It’s always nice when we find a way with even one thing, Elena. I eat a lot of yogurt, so this works out in every way for me. Have a great day!
