May Long

Victoria Day in Canada is a federal holiday. It has existed since at least 1845, and was established in celebration of Queen Victoria’s (known as the mother of confederation) birthday on May 24.

The actual holiday is observed on the last Monday in May preceding May 25, so the date changes from year to year.

The weekend of the holiday is affectionately referred to as the “May long”.

This is, in many areas, including ours, the weekend that campgrounds open, gardens are seeded, and grain farm seeding is at full speed ahead.

Often, Lilacs, as in my feature photo (that I took in 2024) are starting to come into bloom by the May long. Not so this year, because the holiday is a little earlier and the weather has been cooler and drier than usual.

Hopefully the rains yesterday and today will change that.

Beautiful photo, Terry! Our Memorial Day seems to correspond to your May Long. This is our unofficial start of summer. Hope your weather is wonderful soon!

Thanks for your kind compliment on the photo, Betty. I believe you’re right about your Memorial Day and our May Long. It’s overcast and cool here today, but temps are supposed to improve starting tomorrow. The upside of the rain and snow further north in Saskatchewan is that the forest fires that are commonly very active by now, are subdued for the time being.Thankfully, here in the south, we’ve had only light rains and cool temps. (No snow, hurray!) Have a great day!

This shot springs up from my pc screen! We get two bank holidays over here in May for the working folks. It is good to note them as a retiree though since one can avoid the busier places.

I’m happy you liked the shot, Lana. Is a bank holiday the same as what we call a national or statutory holiday in Canada?

Yes same sort of thing. No employers are obliged to give their employees bank holiday Mondays off but most do. Historically the banks would close on these days to get paperwork done hence the name.
