Spring Has Sprung

On my most recent morning walk, signs of spring were finally evident.

Greening grass
and Canada Geese everywhere
Red Winged Blackbirds are back
(Robins too but I couldn’t catch one)
Buds are opening

This time of year brings the promise of summer, especially along the hiking/walking/biking trails and it always brings to mind the little verse I learned in my childhood:

Spring has sprung

The grass is riz

I wonder where the birdies is

The birdy’s on the wing

Now isn’t that absurd

β€˜Cause everybody knows

That the wing is on the bird

We are already into summer here, 94 degrees today. Of course it’s Texas.

We’re having a nice day here today at 80. It’ll heat up beyond that in the weeks to come. Several days last summer, our temps were hotter than the RGV for the same days. We’re a land of extremes, Phil.

Hope it doesn’t get as hot as our part of Texas.

There have been temperatures in the hundreds recorded here in the summer, Phil. For many years, my home town was in the Guinnes record book for being Canada’s hottest summer temperature ever recorded at 114Β°F. That record was broken in 2021 by a town in another province at 114.8Β°F. So yes, our summers here in deep South Saskatchewan can get mighty hot, but those extremely hot days are usually short lived.

They’re common here, and are very territorial, Carole. I’ve heard of people who have had one dive at them if they walk too close to a nest. I’ve not seen nor experienced that. The cool thing is that they show the red feathers when they feel threatened.

The big blackbirds here do the same. These redwinged blackbirds are quite a bit smaller, Carole – maybe the size of a large sparrow.

Terry, I keep meaning to tell you of a book you and your Wolvs nursing friend may be interested in. “Nurse on Call” by Edith Cotterill (published 1986). I listened on audio and it was read in the Black Country accent. It is so interesting and has many hilarious moments. EC was from Tipton, went to school in Wolvs and ended up down the line in district nursing.

Love your Canada Geese and see them all the time. Franc said one was on the roof of an adjoining building to his central Birmingham office last week. Very unusual to see that happen, hope he was ok.

They’ll perch anywhere for a rest. I’m sure he was fine, Lana.
