Foreboding Shadows

Do you like poached eggs? If yes, how do you prepare yours?

Yesterday morning, as the sun was coming up and peering through our balcony’s big sliding doors, I was looking for something for breakfast to both photograph and enjoy.

I came across a recipe on Facebook for air fryer poached eggs.

I love poached eggs and have made them using many different methods but never the air fryer.

As I looked for a spot on my table to set up for a photo, it didn’t matter what spot I chose, the sun coming in the adjacent balcony doors caused long, dark shadows. I was hungry, so decided to just go with it.

My air fryer poached eggs were a disappointing fail of epic proportions. After the time given in the recipe, they hadn’t set one bit and were just slimy, unpalatable blobs, mocking me from the ramekins they were supposed to be “cooked to perfection” in.

I increased the temp a bit and added two minutes. The eggs were slightly more set, but still not edible. I like my poached eggs to have soft yolks but the whites have to be completely set.

I added three more minutes. Now, the whites weren’t great but just slightly more set, and the yolks were overcooked. The surface was wrinkled and not one bit appetizing in appearance.

I plated it up anyways, took the photo, and grudgingly ate my brekky.

Strike that prep method from my list.

I know what you mean. Franc and I got an egg poacher a few months ago. It came with no instructions whatsoever so it has been trial and error for Franc who uses it for poaching. They come out just ok, not particularly wonderful. The small pan alone itself is great though for non stick cooking over other things, especially a meal for one.

Just realised you said AIR FRYER. Sorry – tired haha. I don’t have one of those.

It sounds like a good purchase, Lana. I’m sure “just ok” will improve with practice and it’s nice that the pan is useful for other things.

I love to fry my eggs in a skillet. Sometimes I use my egg cooker to prepare the eggs. It works perfectly and eliminates the waiting time for boiling water. Eggs on toast is yummylicious.

I love fried eggs too – in fact, any way for eggs works for me. I’ve heard before that egg cookers work well. Thanks for stopping by to read and comment!

There is nothing like the old conventional methods.

You’re so right, Amanda. That said, I’m always game to try a new way once. Enjoy your day!

Thanks for this post, Terry, as now I know to NEVER try poached eggs in the air fryer. I usually eat fried or boiled eggs. I admire you for eating these eggs. I don’t like to waste food either.

You’re welcome, Betty and getting the word out was my main goal in this post. I guess every air fryer is different and maybe it works for some people. Food isn’t cheap these days, so I hate to waste anything. Have a fab Saturday!

Yuck! I don’t have an air fryer, so no loss. I do love poached eggs on toast, with tomato or avocado. I never quite get them just right though.

I’ve never had them with tomato but yes with avocado. Getting them just right is an art form, Chuckster. Enjoy your day!

Dan is on a poached eggs kick lately. There are various egg poachers available on Amazon that would probably work fine but my mother poached eggs to perfection by dropping them into a small pan of boiling water and I am determined to prove I can do this as well. I am getting close. 🤏

That’s exactly how my Mom made them, Anne. It’s hit and miss for me that way. There’s an egg poaching pan that came with my set of pots and pans and it’s never fail. The only problem is: I gifted that to our son in law who loves poached eggs too. I can do them pretty good in the microwave but, like you, I intend to practice the way our Moms did them. Have a great day!
