Sneaking Up …

Spring weather in deep south Texas basically happens all winter long.

One hint that spring is sneaking up on us here is the flush of white blossoms on our back yard orange tree.

Soon, we’ll be heading back to our home in Canada, where spring will become glaringly apparent by about mid April to early May.

There will likely still be snow when we arrive home in a couple of weeks. The nice thing about driving home vs flying is that we have time to acclimatize on the way north.

Jumping (via a flight) from the current mid 30° C (mid 90° F) temperatures in South Texas to our near or below freezing temps at home in Saskatchewan, Canada, would be too much of a shock to our systems.

    You are right. We have that problem every time we return to the UK

    Yes, driving is a good way to ease into the climage change. I was just thinking, with our travels, we’ll have missed winter entirely this year. Safe travels when you head north!

      Isn’t retirement grand, Lenore? We’ve missed every winter, with the exception of one, since 2019. In the fall of 2020, because of covid, we weren’t allowed to cross the land border.

      Thanks, Phil and I’ll definitely be posting over the summer. We had a bit of a cold snap for a couple of days here in the RGV, but it didn’t hit freezing. This is the first winter here that we haven’t had a killing frost for a night or two.

    I get what you are saying about acclimatisation Terry. In winter when a Brit has flown to a sunny climate land then arrives back on their own soil it is just the worst feeling – especially at night. Glad you have another option to ease yourselves in gently.

      Thanks, Lana, and yes, in past winters, we’ve had warm getaways for a few weeks and adjusting back to the cold was always a shock to the system for several days after our return flight. This way definitely works better.

      Yep, we are coming back to the UK at the beginning of April for a holiday with the family and we are staying in Cornwall. Brrrr…. the cold will be a shock to the system.

    I know what you mean about the jump. My recent jump from Ireland to an unseasonably hot Norther California was a bit of a shock!

    That sounds like a fun drive! Do you have a fairly routine itinerary at this stage?

      Pleased to meet you too, James! We try to vary our route at least a bit (and sometimes a lot) each year in both directions. We seldom plan a lot on advance, so it’s always a surprise. 😊
