A Fitness Refocus

My next challenge for ChatGPT was to develop a new exercise program for me.

Because I’d been power walking for over eight years, I think my body had become accustomed to it, so it wasn’t as efficient anymore in terms of maintaining fitness.

It seemed my metabolism had stalled out.

I entered my issues, my age, and my goals. Before too long, I had a program that I could live with.

I’ve now switched from power walking to the Japanese walking method and have added strength training.

ChatGPT outlined everything in detail, and so far, it’s going well.

The Japanese walking method takes half the time of the power walking (30 mins vs an hour), but it definitely feels more intense. The frequency is five days per week with slower and/or longer walks or a rest on the other two days.

The strength training is mild and done via light weights, resistance bands, and calisthenics. Right now the frequency is 3x per week.

Today is day 10 and I’m already noticing improvements in terms of energy and how much better my clothes are fitting.

Getting healthy is also a goal I have. It can be hard to keep things going. Life can through you curveballs and before you know it, that healthy routine is not so routine anymore. Some good choices have helped me. Doing the stairs instead of the elevator and even replacing junk food with healthy snacks.

This is a good use of AI. I hate weights, but I want a resistance band routine, so I’ll be asking ChatGPT to help me with that.

As leery as I am of AI, I might have to check this chatbot thing out. I watched some interviews with authors on YouTube, and was shocked at how many now use AI to help write their books. The ones that don’t are David Grann and Amor Towles, who just happen to be two of my favorites. I did try it once a year back, but I didn’t care for how it changed my wording. I also have a 1970 Underwood student typewriter I many break out again soon. Sounds as if you are making this program work well for you.

I’m cautious about a lot of ai too, Phil. This particular program comfortable (so far). That said, it makes mistakes too. When called out on those mistakes, it corrects them if it can. Sometimes it can’t. All of that said, it’s been very helpful to me in many ways. I’ll be anxious to hear about your experience with it. Have a great day!

I’ve been thinking I need to do this same thing (just haven’t done it yet). I know progressive overload is important with my weight training, so I’m going to ask AI for a plan. Thanks for the reminder to do it and best wishes for great success!

Terry, great post. I’ve been reading your forays into The Matrix with a cautious fascination and based on your recent posts, I gave it a whirl. Fascinating. It anticipated follow-on questions, pointed me to other resources and got me thinking about so many other tangential topics. Thanks for making this approachable 😂🙏

How do you use a resistance band as you walk along at pace?!

I don’t,Lana. The strength training is on its own, separate from the walking. 😊

Ah! I had visions of a power walk whilst simultaneously expanding the chest with bands 🙂

Way to rock it. Terry💪! Adding strength training is huge. Curios, what is the Japanese walking method? Way to invest in your life my friend – so happy for you.

Thank you, Dwight! I’ve been investing in my health and life for many years. The Japanese walking method is simple in description, yet a truly good cardio workout with minimal time invested. It’s also recommended for seniors. You walk 3 minutes at a slow pace, then 3 minutes at around 75-80% of your top pace and then cycle those back and forth until you’ve completed 30 minutes. I made playlists for myself with the alternating tempos. Most songs run 2.5 – 3 minutes so that works good for me to set my pace. It’s HIIT for walking. Have a great day!

Yes, I’ve seen posts from family at home about that big dump of snow. I’m sure the moisture is most welcome to the farmers. And yes, it’s good to shake things up, Anne. Have a great day,Anne!
