And That It Is

Last Saturday, we took a little road trip to nearby towns to explore their main streets. We were also on the hunt for an infamous roadside tavern.

Many people we know here in south Texas had told us about the uniqueness of an establishment called β€œThe Junkyard Bar”.

We’d passed the location several times over the years but had never spotted the bar.

This time, because we were paying attention, we spied the sign (feature photo)

There were no vehicles in the parking lot (except, of course, for the truck on the post) but we could see a young fellow cleaning inside so we asked if we could come in and take some photos. He told us that the bar didn’t officially open until 3pm but we were more than welcome to come in and take a look around, and he even offered us a beer.

We’d been told that this place is wall to wall people during opening hours, so our arrival time was perfect to explore and get some photos of things you’d never see if the place was packed.

I don’t know if you’d call it β€œatmosphere” but its decor (or lack of it) certainly lives up to its name.

I believe the band β€˜Hubcap and the Wheels’ played there during their β€˜Heyday.’.

Haha! Although I’ve never heard of that band, I can see no reason why they’d have never played here, Chuckster. Good one! πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜‚

This is awesome and reminds me of some local bars back in Puerto Rico from when I was growing up. They’re always enjoyable because of their simplicity and, in most cases, low prices.

We find that to be very true, Phil – especially here in deep south Texas. Enjoy your day!

Looks like an interesting place! I have to think that even if people don’t pay for the popcorn, chips and peanuts, that the bar makes up for it selling drinks. All that salt makes one thirsty!

My sister in law says that every kind of person imaginable goes there … from β€œWinter Texans” to locals, to bikers and everyone in between. Have a great day, Carole!

We’ve heard that when the band is playing and the place is full, the atmosphere is second to none, Darryl. Have a great day!

That was nice the guy let you go in and take pictures. Questions: What is that roof made out of, the place where you wrote you wouldn’t want to be there if it is raining? Also, does the border fence having an opening behind him or is it just the angle of the photo? I enjoyed reading about your discoveries. πŸ™‚

The roof is thatched with palm fronds, Charla. The border fence (aka β€œthe wall”) has openings all along its length. It makes me wonder how effective it is. That said, border patrol is ever present via land, water (the Rio Grande River), and air. I’m happy you enjoyed the read. Have a great day!

It must be the customers that bring the ambience. I can see it being a happening place. πŸ‘
