A Homely Ceremony

“The smell of good bread baking, like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in its evocation of innocence and delight…

[Breadmaking is] one of those almost hypnotic businesses, like a dance from some ancient ceremony. It leaves you filled with one of the world’s sweetest smells… there is no chiropractic treatment, no Yoga exercise, no hour of
meditation in a music-throbbing chapel. that will leave you emptier of bad thoughts than this homely ceremony of making bread.”

I recently was given some sourdough starter. The combination of being in a travel trailer and getting sick led to failure. I love sourdough bread. Or rather, I love eating it, but I’m not sure I want to bake it. It seems overwhelming. But I agree, the smell of fresh bread baking would be awesome. Perhaps I can find some frozen loves somewhere. 🙂

We like sourdough too, but I’m not a fan of babysitting sourdough starter. Good luck with finding frozen loaves!

Terry, nice gem from MFK Fisher—bread baking as therapy, whisking away bad thoughts like a ritual dance. That warm, hypnotic aroma truly evokes pure delight and innocence, better than any yoga or meditation. Makes me crave fresh loaves and a cozy kitchen right now!

So true Terry – and just like the smell of frozen laundry, fresh from the line, it is a smell that is easily evoked for a lifetime.

Yes! Frozen sheets once thawed … I can smell those to this day and that was from my childhood. Have a great day, Anne!
