2016 – A Scenic Detour

After touring my cousin around the Las Vegas area for a week, we took her to the plane and then made our way home via a different route than usual.

My feature photo is of a portion of Arches National Park near Moab, UT. We didn’t take any side roads to see the actual arches, but even without that, the scenery “on the way bywas spectacular.

We’d hoped to drive from there to Denver, Co.

At Grand Junction, Co, where we spent the night, we were advised the next morning by the hotel clerk, that there had been a rockslide ahead, so the road we planned to take was closed. We were also informed that roads out of Denver (from our direction) were closed for the winter.

Enter Plan B:

We drove on as far as Aspen, Co, toured the place and watched some skiing. Neither of us had been there before, so it was a fun little “been there done that” trip.

One of the many Aspen ski runs

After Aspen, we turned around and headed back to Grand Junction.

From there, we headed north to and through Wyoming and more incredible scenery.

Hoodoos in South Wyoming

After Wyoming, it was South Dakota and then North Dakota (which I’ll cover in a future post) and then home.

We visit North Dakota often, so I’m sure I’ll have different posts about it as time goes on.

What a funny name. Hoodoos. It made me laugh. The peaks look spectacular. And now you can say you’ve been skiing at Aspen. Woohoo!

Well, we didn’t actually ski, Amanda. Being from the bald, flat prairie, neither hubs nor I had the opportunity to learn. We had lots of fun watching, tho. Hoodoos are common in North America.

You are far more adventurous when travelling to take detours etc. than I am, Terry.

I love the picture of the Hoodoos in South Wyoming

My hubs is a retired long haul semi driver with over 3 million accident free miles over his career. I’m confident in his driving skills, thus my ability to be adventurous, Carole. Hoodoos are numerous in many parts of the USA and Canada. It’s always fun and interesting to spy new ones. Have a great rest of your day!

My sister and husband believe that if they don’t go to Europe or any foreign country, they haven’t taken a proper trip. I asked her not long ago if she had ever seen the Grand Canyon? Monument Valley? The Hoover Dam? Things in America. She said there’s not enough to see here.

Wow! I beg to differ with her, Phil. Hubs and I have said we won’t live long enough to see everything there is to see in Texas alone, far less every other state, and even here in Canada.

I find this stance funny! But a bit sad … 🙂

I visited Arches back in 1983. It was an amazing landscape. Haven’t seen the Hoodoos yet!

I hope someday, we’ll travel that way again, and see the actual arches. We’ve recently discovered that there’s an area about an hour’s drive from here that has hoodoos! It’s on our “discover home” list for next summer. Have a fab day, Betty!
