Tombstone, AZ is steeped in history (and more than a bit of kitsch)
I’m sure we’d have enjoyed our stay a lot more if it hadn’t been so blasted cold outside!
Despite the weather, we made the best of it and finally found a place to warm up with some Irish Coffee.
I was there back in 1980 while spending some time in Old Tucson studying movie sets. I’m sure it’s changed a bit since then, but what a great old western town. Also, my outright favorite western movie…Tombstone with Kurt and the boys. I’ll be your huckleberry, an ode to old Mark Twain. Remember, it’s dry, cold, and heat.
I was there to study the way the movie sets were built. I spent a week crawling around the place talking to the folks that maintained it. I learned how they built the buildings, the walls etc. I then went back to Dallas and was the designer and construction coordinator for two fellas that built a party ranch south of Dallas called Big D Texas, that later became Old Fort Dallas. It was a western town made to look like it existed in the 1860s. A few movies and TV shows were filmed there over the years. Sadly, they sold the land ten years later and the place went to ruin and was razed around four years ago for another project. It was great fun while it lasted.
This was in early Feb (Feb 02, in fact) of 2016, and as I mentioned in a previous reply – at a higher elevation than most AZ destinations. We were based in the Phoenix, area, which wasn’t “hot”, but certainly much warmer than Tombstone at that time. Yes, sometimes revisiting cooler places in memory or in photos can be helpful on a hot summer day 😊 Have a fab Wednesday!
