The Dreaded Rabbit Cage

When I was a child, my dad worked building the first gravel roads around our small prairie town.

He was known near and far for his CAT operating skills.

While Dad was out on his daily work schedule, heโ€™d often come across wounded and/or abandoned animals.

His soft heart resulted in a great variety of temporary pets for us kids. Once they were nursed back to heath, or had grown enough, the critters were released back to their home in the fields.

One spring, he brought home two abandoned baby rabbits. He promptly built a cage for them and all seemed rosy and filled with love of nature, until โ€ฆ

Taking turns cleaning the rabbit cage became a part of the chore list for my sis and me.

All the love of baby bunnies went downhill from there.

If youโ€™ve ever had to clean a rabbit cage, youโ€™ll understand.

Yep, cleaning out the rabbits and guinea pigs cages when the kids were young was the pits! Of course the kids made promises and kept them for a few weeks until the novelty wore off.

That novelty wore off very quickly for my sis and me, Carole! Thanks for dropping by to read and comment! I hope you rest well tonight!

Bunnies are a pain in the ass. My two boys had them and wouldn’t clean the cages or feed them, so I gave them a new home via a friend. I have Rabbits that visit our back yard, eat the plants and poop here and there, and that’s fine with me. Rabbit stew tastes darn good. Just saying.

There are two things in Canada that are bigger than in Texas – those are rabbits and deer. Iโ€™ve never tasted rabbit meat, nor do I have any desire to do so. Our daughter and grandkids tried it on a vacation in Dominican and said it was good.

We have Jack Rabbits in Texas, and they are so big you can ride them like a horse, if you can catch one. We also have the Jack-a-Lope, which is a cross between a rabbit and a Antalope, a rabbit with horns. My grandfather told me that they were places on his farm that they visited, but I never saw one, except at the Biscuit Ranch, the local cafe in Santa Anna. It was mounted on a nice piece of mahogany wood and looked nice hanging on the wall with the other deer heads. https://notesfromthecactuspatch.com/2023/09/07/texas-lore-and-legends/

My grandmother had a few, and my goodness, the messes were inside and outside the cages. Great fertilizer, though. ๐Ÿ˜‚

What your dad did was so sweet! I never had a rabbit, though I did have a guinea pig once. One of my best school friends had a large white rabbit called Bunjy. Her dad would take them on a drive so Bungy could run about on huge fields as a treat but there was no fun in it for them is since they spent all the time have to stop him from running down rabbit holes and disappearing forever!

I’ve never had rabbits. Now, did your dad know how you and your sister felt about this? My guess is he did. And did he ever bring home any more rabbits? This post gave me a chuckle.

Dad didnโ€™t know about how weโ€™d feel about cleaning the rabbit cage, Betty – but he soon learned. There were no further rabbits but many other rescued varmints over the years. I thought I had replied to you before but maybe I didnโ€™t properly hit send. If there are now two replies, Iโ€™ll blame WP for a glitch, lol.
