I’ve been walking past this house for several years when I do my in-city power walks and also when I walk to the swimming pool.
It was just a few weeks ago, that I noticed this piece of a car relic in the front yard. It was behind a low fence so maybe that’s why I had never seen it before. I’m sure it’s been there for a long time, and I’m sure the home owner has a nostalgic attachment to it, but I just don’t “get it”.
I know that we all have our own ideas as to what makes a pretty yard and we’re all entitled to express ourselves in our property design. I just can’t help wondering though, if this would be a perfect nesting spot for critters, specifically rodents.
What I found interesting about the photo I stopped briefly to take, is that even before only minor post processing to remove a couple of distracting elements, a tweak for white balance, and no filters, the car section looked like a painting for some reason. Perhaps it’s because of the way the light hit the old (and likely original) paint job. Whatever it was, the effect was a pleasant surprise.

So, despite my personal feelings about the appropriateness of this lawn ornament, I guess in some small way, it created art.
“Buy, buy, says the sign in the shop window; Why, why, says the junk in the yard.”
Paul McCartney
Perhaps there are plans for this relic. Perhaps it holds great sentimental value. Perhaps it is an investment – I see it sticking out of a billboard advertising something. Perhaps it is a person’s statement of nonconformity. Perhaps there is an artist in that home and the relic is to be that person’s medium. Or perhaps it is just junk, but I don’t think so. At least one person I know has elevated it to art. It’s better than some of the art I’ve seen!

I couldn’t recall seeing a billboard in the yard, Betty, so I zoomed in on the photo, and no, there isn’t one. This portion of an old car is just sitting on the ground. I appreciate all of your comments about what it might mean to the owner and I thank you for the compliment about elevating it to art. Have a wonderful Thursday!

I’ve re-read your comment about the billboard, Betty and “now” I get it! You meant you could see (in your mind’s eye) this car being on a billboard. Sometimes the written word can be interpreted in different ways 😊

Hi Terry. I could tell you didn’t quite understand what I meant, but I thought, “Oh well. I’ll let it go.” I am glad you went back and reread it. As a writer, I strive for clarity, but it is always a challenge! Can’t you just see that half car up on a billboard with its lights on? That’s what my mind thought of first. Hope you have a great rest of the day!

I sure could see that car front on a billboard, Betty. Whenever I think I may have misinterpreted a comment, I generally re-read everything. It’s not that you were unclear, but rather, it’s the thing that happens with the written word sometimes. I need to make it my habit to re-read “before” I reply.

At Gulf State Park, someone came up to me and had read my blog. They commented they didn’t know where Corinth was located! I hadn’t thought to mention the state – Mississippi. They eventually figured it out while reading, but it did remind me to keep working at clarity!
