Boca Chica Village was founded in 1967 by a Chicagoan property developer. It was originally named Kennedy Shores” and was intended for working class Polish migrants.
The original townsite, which consisted of 30 ranch style houses, suffered massive damage by Hurricane Beulah later that same year. In 2017, after years of struggling to survive, the population was down to only four people in two homes and an average of 12 seasonal residents.
In August 2014, SpaceX announced that they had selected the Boca Chica area as the location for their South Texas Launch Site, and that their “control center” would actually be on land within the village itself, while the launch complex would be located two miles to the east.
In 2019, Elon Musk offered to buy each of the homes at three times the market value. His plan is to develop a new village and county named Starbase, TX. The new village will include the existing Boca Chica Village.

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
George Bernard Shaw
Very interesting! That Elon Musk is a complicated character. Odd at times, but he is definitely an innovator! It would be interesting to watch Starbase develop.

I agree with your take on Elon Musk, Betty. I’m sure that, all being well … we’ll visit Boca Chica again in coming years. It’ll be interesting to see what (if anything) happens there in terms of his proposed “new” village. Have a great Tuesday!
