Each January, the Port Isabel, TX Chamber of Commerce Hosts “The Longest Causeway Run and Fitness Walk.” January 2022 will be its 37th year.
The causeway in my feature photo joins the mainland of TX to South Padre Island, TX. We crossed this beautiful curving structure a few times on visits to SPI over the winter of 2019/20.
The 10K run and 5K walk both start at Port Isabel on the mainland and end on South Padre Island.
I intended to enter in 2020, but was sidelined by a cranky hip.
All being well this winter, I’ll enter the 5K fitness walk. My plan (if it’s allowed), is to stop at the 5K ending checkpoint in order to register my time and then continue on to the runners’ 10K ending checkpoint. The runners leave ahead of the walkers, so my continuation would be unaccompanied, and my time for the full 10K wouldn’t count. I’d have the satisfaction of having done it and that would be reward enough.

Roy T. Bennett
That sounds like a great plan! So, would you take photos on the 2nd 5K?
