I have two favourite walking paths in the trail system our city has developed.

One of these is The Red Coat Trail. The historical trail winds through our city and a part of it is now a designated hiking/walking path.

Whenever I walk this path through the trees and the brush alongside the river, I try to imagine what it was like to navigate this country before the time of roads. I often smile at the thought trying to explain to someone in the late 1800’s, that some day in this area, there would be paved paths that would be used only for exercise.

“The Red Coat Trail is a 1300-km route that approximates the path taken in 1874 by the North West Mounted Police in their “March West” to bring law and order to the Canadian West.”
