I’m posting very late today.
Today has been a day of celebration and reflection.
Tomorrow marks the one year point from when I started my virtual power walk of the Appalachian Trail.
I did a 10K this morning at my best pace ever and in the shortest time ever for that distance ! (pace was 9.54 mins/ k or 3.9 mph) I’ve power walked 1186 K (736.9 miles) in a year and surpassed my goal for the year!
My goal when I started was to get the distance of the AT done (in power walking) by my 70th birthday and in order to do that, I have to average 500K of power walking every 6 months. So, even despite a few set-backs where I had to take longer breaks than I wanted to, I’m still a bit ahead of the game for the first year. And yes, I’m pumping my own tires!
Fingers crossed that the old bod holds up so I can complete it on time.

You go, Girl! That is a fabulous, stretch goal, and I am betting you will make it. “A Walk in the Woods” is one of my most favorite books. What inspired you to choose the Appalachian Trail? Just the fact that it is a very long trail?

Thank you, Betty! I love Bill Bryson’s travel books and read that one some time ago. A guy from our home town did a real hike of the AT. He did it in segments, over 3 summers. His stories were so interesting. Then, our first winter in Texas, I got to know gal who was on our street in the RV park who did an actual through hike of the AT a few years prior. When I took up power walking, a friend recommended the book “Grandma Gatewood’s Walk – The Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail”. This is possibly the most inspirational book I’ve ever read. When I was looking for a walking app to keep me motivated, I came across “Walk the Distance”, and one of the walks in the App is the AT. I love the app because it has photos of points along the way and lots of info about the trail. So I guess you could say that I’ve been drawn to it in one way or another over several years. Have a great day!

I will have to check into both that book and the “Walk the Distance” app – for both myself and my daughter. Both those things are right up our alleys. Enjoy your day!
