The Plain Chachalaca is native to the Rio Grande Valley in Southeast Texas, Mexico, Central America and parts of South America.
While walking one of the many trails at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, TX, we heard a loud chorus of the call distinctive to Chachalacas. The large group crossed our path less than 2 feet in front of us. Several others were walking along the branches of the surrounding trees on both sides of the path.
“What a funny bird!”
“It looks like a chicken.”
“They are so loud!”
